More Accolades to "Israel Fashion Art": "It's a Treasure"

Hi, in my previous post I was happy to share with you and to thank Prof. Efrat Tseelon for including an article about "Israel Fashion Art"
"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל" in the British Leeds Univ. "Intellect" Journal which she edits but I didn't include
some relevant links. So here they are: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/intellect/csfb/2012/00000002/f0020001

Since, Passover is around the corner I would like to bring to your attention, that Israel's Egyptian heritage is researched and colorfully represented in the album-book, particularly in the chapter "From Pharoes daughters to President Sadaat Peace Visit" and hence might add a fresh and surprising aspect to the Seder's table. So this is an additional reason to view the book as a holiday gift for yourself and/or your loved ones.

Looking for more reasons? Here are some of the heart-warming responses the book has received for which I thank from the depth of my heart:

Mimi Ziv, a Shenkar Prof. wrote to me that the book is a treasure
Yaheli Hashefa  wrote that it is a masterpiece
Luci Zutof: The book is amazing and a must to whomever is interested in culture, fashion or history.
Michal Avissar: It is heavenly

A sculptural newspaper dress by Shir Dor & Roi Gadasi from the exhibit "The materials out of which words are made" of Haaretz and Shenkar. Photo: Tami Dahan

Hi, Recently I have attended several exhibitions which relate in one way or another to my album-book
"Israel Fashion Art" שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל"

An 1982 creation by Maskit modeled by Tami Ben-Ami.. Photo: Mula Eshet

At the opening of a photography exhibition in the Ramat Aviv Mall I've met an old friend - this 1982 photo of Israel's top-model Tami Ben-Ami (in a "Maskit" outfit) by Mula Eshet from my book "Israel Fashion Art" "שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל". Another old friend was an image of international top-model Michaela Bercu (in a Bagir suit) by Yaki Halperin from the exhibition "Glamor Glimpses - Fashion Photography in a Mirror of a Century"
"הבזקי זוהר - צילום אופנה בראי המאה" which I was invited to curate by The Israel Museum of Photography in Tel-Hai and which opened the millennium in the Museum.
At another exhibit by photographer Mula Eshet I discovered a photo of my very dear friend Alber Elbaz who wrote an introduction to my book. In the photograph Alber (who celebrated yesterday a decade as Lanvin's designer) is seen during his students days several months or a year after I had first met him.
Last week I attended a very unique exhibit "The Materials from which Words are Made" held by Haaretz newspaper in which all the designs exhibited were created by Shenkar students out of old Haaretz newspapers.  The exhibit was initiated by the newspaper's cultural supplement "Galleria"'s editor Lisa Peretz.
How does it correspond with my book? In the book's chapter "Talking Clothes" I explored the sources of the use of words in fashion as well as in art, referring, among other cultural experiences,  to Picasso's and Braque's use of newspapers in their 1913's collages and to Elsa Schiaparelli's use of newspaper prints in her 1930's fashion. In another chapter about knits I mentioned architect & artist Neta Dor who in 2005 knitted one of her creations from folded strips of.... Haaretz newspaper.

"Israel Fashion Art" FB's Fan Club reached 1,900 Fans

A Menahem Oz photo exclusive to "Israel Fashion Art"
"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל"
album-book of an Alon Siman-Tov creation. Styling: Nurit Bat-Yaar.

Hi, Today I would like to share with you the happy event regarding the book's Facebook Fan Cub which marks over 1900 fans. Thanks so much dear

"Israel Fashion Art" fans.

During my many years as "Yedioth Ahronoth" fashion editor I was always eager to discover new talents, young designers uninhibited by conventions and marketing limitations. Usually, I would find such free spirits in the fashion academies. I would then initiate stylised editorials which provided the imaginative students a springboard to fame and success and my newspaper readers an exciting aesthetic experience. Thus I fully iidentified with Diana Vreeland's motto: My purpose is to show my fashion readers things they don't even know they want.

One of the unique creations I discovered at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design was the above hat by Alon Siman-Tov. Alon designed it within a hat design course taught by creative hat-designer Gil Becher his inspiration being the film "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids". His was one of about five-seven hats I selected for the editorial, and the only one which ended up in the album-book.

Like many of the students whose unique and exciting designs were included in the book - after his graduation Alon became a very successful designer who left his mark on the international arena. Among the Fashion Houses he designed for were Enrico Coveri, Roberto Cavali and Levi's accessories.

"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" In Inbal Fradis' Website

Hi, Today I discovered the above picture from the "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" ,
"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל" album-book in its designer's Inbal Fradis' website. Inbal shows it as it is seen in the book, next to a couple of images of the book's cover. It is a textile design she had created during her years at the Shenkar college, in 2006, as a suggestion for a T shirt print.

I chose to include it in the book's chapter called "Talking Clothes" not only because its text expresses the spontaneous thoughts of a bicycle rider about the fun of bicycle-riding but also because of its composition, its color-combination and the humorist placement of the bicycle wheels....
What a fun print for a T shirt. If I were a fashion manufacturer, I would have bought it from Inbal, and would have printed it on T shirts, confident that it would have become a hit not only among bicycle riders but definitely at least among them...

Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008 in Yedioth Ahronoth's Shenkar's 40th Article

Hi, On the occasion of Shenkar's 40th anniversary, Michal Levi, "Yedioth Ahronoth"'s fashion writer devoted a major article to the fashion college's most successful graduates. Since many of them are featured in
"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל 1948-2008"
She was kind enough to consult with me as to the ones which should be included in the best graduates list choosing their designs' photos from the book's very wide selection.

"The one who followed Shenkar's thousands of students throughout the years is Nurit Bat-Yaar, "Yedioth Ahronoth"'s former mythic journalist who marked the most talented students who in time became famed international designers.", writes Michal Levi, "many of them are featured in her book "Israel Fashion Art" which documents Israel's fashion throughout the ages. Together we created the list of graduates who made it to the top". Among the ones known internationally listed in the article is Lanvin's Alber Elbaz. "In her book Nurit Bat-Yaar describes how she noticed his talent manifested in the fashion illustrations Elbaz showed her 30 years ago when he was still a soldier". Regarding Koby Halperin (who is also featured in the book) Michal writes: "In 1998, Nurit Bat-Yaar marked Kobi Halperin's final collection as one of the most noteworthy of his class. Starting 1999, he has been heading the design department of Eli Tahari."
Among my other discoveries who left their mark were Zuri Gueta, Victor Bellaish, Yaron Minkowski, and Yossi Katsav who are all featured in the book as well as in the article. Pictures of Shenkar's graduates' designs who made it from the book to the article are (from top) London's Avshalom Gur, recycled design (taken by Ean Gilet), Clodette Zorea's design (photo: Rami Zarneger) who got her an offer from Gaultier, and Yaron Minkowski's creation (photo: Eldad Maestro) made from flea-market Bucharian embroidered table cloth which made it to Eurovision.

Zuri Gueta of "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" Recipient of 2010 Andy Prize

Hi, Today I would like to share with you the story of Zuri Gueta. Gueta is featured in "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008
"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל""
in the chapters devoted to textiles and to futuristic designs. Recently it has been announced that he is the 2010 recipient of the Andy Award for contemporary crafts founded by philanthrophist Charles Bronfman in the memory of his wife's love of the arts. The recipient of the Andy Award receives, among other things, an exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and two of his creations are purchased by the Tel Aviv Museum as well as by The Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
The picture enclosed here taken by Eshel Ezer which appears in the book's chapter about futuristic creations and technologies is of a unique lit dress designed by Zuri Gueta with Maya Arazi and Merav Levi in 1996 while they were still students at "Shenkar" college. It incorporates silicon, the futuristic material Zuri believes in. This exceptional material he is using to create avant-garde three dimensional fabrics, jewelry, accessories, and art works is highly innovative. No wonder they caught the eyes and aroused the curiosity of leading Paris designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, "Dior," Armani" and many other leading designers who incorporated his textiles in their Haute Couture collections.
Zuri is one of several promising Shenkar students who caught my eye while they were still in college who more than fulfilled their promise being considered now stars in their respective fields of specialty.
