"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" in "Haaretz"' "Designer" Magz.

The year 2011 is only a few days away and people are into new calenders for the new year. The idea of time in general and lost time in particular intrigued writer Yaara Keidar who wrote an article on the subject in the monthly "Designer" magazine of "Haaretz" daily newspaper. Yaara's article features new as well as nostalgic clocks and calenders.
Among them she included two 60s calenders which I was photographed for during my youth.

As I've described in my August 17th, 2010 post here, at the insistence of the great Israeli design diva of "Maskit", Fini Leitersdorf I had become a "Maskit" house-model on whom Fini created some of her unique gorgeous gowns as well as a sought-after photography model. Among the many ads I was photographed for were several calenders two of which are featured in the monthly "Designer" magz. mentioned above.
One of them is  a "Samson Tires" calender in which I'm sitting on top of a car. The other is a "Tseva" (Paint) calender seen here.

This last one is also featured in my album-book "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008"
"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל" about Israeli Fashion.
I've included it there in the chapter about accessories since it shows the ballerina shoes which were fashionable at the time.

Israeli Fashion of "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" album-book @Jewish Press International

A Sami Ben-gad photo from "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" album-book by Nurit Bat-Yaar of a Gershon Bram designs
Hi, You are most welcome to go over the posts proceeding from the latest to the earliest or viceaversa, or viewing them according to a specific month. However, a few days ago
I was notified about another option provided by the Jewish Press International. The website has now a new section called Faceshuk in which it lists blogs about ISRAELI FASHION.

Among the various fashion blogs it lists this one and in a very lovely and useful way I wish Blogger would adopt. Each post of the blog is listed according to its title (subject) accompanied by a photo from the specific post.

So, if you would rather look for a specific post/subject by its title - you are invited to visit this website at the link: http://faceshuk.jewpi.com/groups/nurit-bat-yaar-fashion-art/

Israeli Fashion in "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008": "A Million Dollar Looking Gift"

"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" book cover's photo by Miri Davidovich of a Jacob Harpaz gown.

Hi, One of the greatest responses "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008"
"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל"
album-book received when it was recently offered on Facebook as a holiday gift was that "it's a million dollars looking gift". Aviva Pivco, a former successful Israeli designer who wrote it dressed many Israeli celebrities and actresses. She is represented in the book in the following unique design in which far-eastern influences meet a near-east hat. The 1984 Menahem Oz photo, was taken in Paris and modeled by Maybritt.
Today, I'm uploading the 8th part of the heart-warming book responses for which I'm so very grateful. In addition to the "million dollar looking gift" of Aviva, it includes "Yedioth Ahronoth"s Journalist Yasmin Levi's comment about the book: "Perfection", Mina Tselim, Gingette leather design founder's: "Unique book, photographed and edited gloriously",Lucy Zotoff's: "A fantastic book. Highly  recommended" and many other much appreciated comments.

Hi, in my Nov. 21, 2010 post I reported about the capsule exhibit of photos from "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" which was uploaded by the author and sociologist Prof. Oz Almog onto his and his wife's , Dr. Tamar Almog's, website "People Israel" http://www.peopleil.org/

Today I'm happy to share with you an item about the exhibit which was published by Shelly Gross, "Zmanim Modernim"'s fashion editor in today's "Yedioth Ahronoth".
The item's title is "What is Israeli?" and the subtitle is: Exceptional Photos of Local Fashion were uploaded to the Internet". Among other things Shelly mentions the fact that the exhibit includes the dress singing star Orna Dats wore to her Eurovision performance after seeing it on the "Zmanim Modernim"'s cover.

The dress which was designed by Yaron Minkowski and won him an international prize in a students' competition is made of embroidered Bucharian table cloths which he had found in Jafa's Flea market.

"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" - A Capsule Exhibit in Oz Almog's People In Israel Website

Hi, Today I would like to share with you the opening of a capsule exhibit of images from the album-book "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" in the People in Israel website of Sociologist, author, and Haifa University Prof. Oz Almog. The link to the exhibit for a month starting today, as well as it's permanent link are at the end of the text of this post.
I was honored and happy to have been approached by Prof. Almog regarding this exhibit in his website.
Presently, I present the text acompanying the exhibit in Hebrew, but at a later time I plan to translate it into English. The subject of the capsule exhibit is: Original Israeli Style and its components, some of which are embroidery, use of coins, hoods, patchwork, and art-inspired creations.

This photo from the book "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" (and the exhibit) is of a 1994 Dani Bar-Shai patchwork skirt. Styling: Nurit Bat-Yaar. Photo: Dana Menussi.

Leo DiCaprio's love, Bar Refaeli in "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008"

Hi, in honor of Hollywood's mega-star Leonardo DiCaprio's visit with Bar Refaeli in Israel today - here is one of the international super-model's  great photos from the album book
"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008"  "שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל".

First, DiCaprio landed here with his private airplane about a week ago to take the stunning Sports Illustrated cover-girl with him for a vacation in Egypt and Jordan to celebrate his 38th birthday. Last night they returned to Israel and are vacationing in Tel-Aviv along with Bar's parents Tsipi (a former gorgeous model herself) and Rafi and Leo's mom.

Bar is modeling since she was a beautiful blue-eyed baby, but now with her perfect figure and outstanding facial features she is really the creme de la creme of the modeling scene in Israel as well as internationally. This 2005 photo of her, taken by Ron Kedmi, is from the Diva swimwear collection designed by Rachel Papo. It is one of her three photos included in the book, all of which are displayed on a full page.

So, if you were wondering how this perfect specimen of a human being, who happens to also be DiCaprio's love, looks in a bikini inspired by the piercing trend - here she is in all her glamorous self.

International Singing Star Ofra Haza in "Israel Fashion Art - 1948-2008"

1948-2008 ‎'s FACEBOOK FAN CLUB has now over 1200 FANS. I appreciate it very much DEAR FANS. On this special occasion I uploaded an Ofra Haza image from the book with her golden coins hood (taken by Moshe Sasson).
Ofra Haza wasn't just a fantastic singer, highly successful world-wide. She was also a fashion icon who inspired designers with her unique performance garb which incorporated her cultural heritage.

One of these outfits included this Yemenite coin hood, which was worn in Yemen by all Hebrew newly weds and which was in fact their survival kit. A type of portable "bank" from which they can draw money in case of need.

Inspired by this type of hoods as well as by the Beduine facial coin chains - in the 60s "Maskit" designer Fini Leitersdorf incorporated golden coins in her original Israeli designs thus turning them into one of the typical aspects of Israeli style. Lea Gottlieb of Gottex also adorned her unique colorful ethnic beachwear with coins.

Later on, other Israeli fashion designers such as Shai Shalon and Silvia Vered used coins in a more up to date designs. To see them and read about them - you are invited to go to the coins chapter of "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" called " Coins – from a Portable Bank to the Sexiest Beachwear" .

President Shimon Peres about "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008"

Hi, Today I would like to share with you a highly appreciative letter I have received about the book
"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל 1948-2008" from Israel's very much admired president, Mr. Shimon Peres. In his letter President Peres thanks me for the book and writes:  Your pioneering album documents in words and photos a captivating piece of history which is an important part of the Israeli artistic and cultural reality since the country's existence.

Like in many other areas, so in the field of the art of fashion - Israel was blessed with a flowing fountainhead of talent, imagination, and daring. These are manifested in each and every page of the album-book and place Israel's designers on the world's front.

The spectacular designs, which are full of beauty, creativity, and originality, in addition to the deeply rooted, social and historical aspects manifested throughout the book's chapters, turns the reading and leafing through it to a true experience.
May you see blessing in your work and keep-up the good work!
Shimon Peres.

After posting the letter on Facebook in addition to many "likes" I got the following responses:

"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" - 2nd Time in Simona Kogan's Blog

Hi, today I would like to share with you the second post Simona Kogan published in her blog about "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008". In her 1st post she told her readers how I had first met international designer star of Lanvin Alber Elbaz (who wrote an introduction to my book) while he was still a soldier in charge of culture. This time she refers to what she has learned about Israeli Fashion from my responses to FIT's Keren Ben-Horin's interview with me.

Some Israeli Fashion History

By Simona

Israeli fashion expert Nurit Bat-Yaar, author of the book “Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008″
(“שיכרון עיצובים – אמנות האופנה בישראל”) has really inspired me to find out more about the history of Israeli fashion and how it came to be what it is today (and why!) Here are some things that have been uncovered…

A 1976 Lea Gottlieb design for Gottex from "Israel Fashion Album 1948-2008" by Nurit Bat-Yaar, taken By Ben Lam.
First, I wanted to mention a blog post by Keren Ben-Horin, an Israeli-born fashion student with a degree at Shenkar School of Engineering and Design who is now studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and specifically focusing on the history of specific companies like Gottex as part of her degree. Ben-Horin interviewed Bat-Yaar for On Pins and Needles, the blog written by students getting their Masters in History, Theory, and Museum Practice at FIT.

Now, some background on Nurit Bat-Yaar. Bat-Yaar had no idea that a short run as a model would lead her to writing about the world of fashion but when she entered the style world, she knew she had found her calling. Bat-Yaar was first a model of Maskit’s multicultural designs, which led her to meet the right people, who discovered she had a knack for fashion writing.

Bat-Yaar is a former fashion editor of Israel’s most widely circulated daily newspaper “Yedioth Ahronoth.” For 26 years, she had the opportunity to discover new budding designers in Israel and give them a springboard to show their work.
Before her 26-year stint, Bat-Yaar introduced Israeli readers to American fashion as a reporter for the “Maariv” daily newspaper where she wrote about NY’s leading designers for 5 years.

Bat-Yaar has reported from Europe and US Fashion Weeks about the latest international trends and has interviewed the world’s leading designers. She’s had a regular fashion spot in cable TV lifestyle programs. She participated in a documentary about the history of beauty in Israel and was a guest judge on Israel’s Project Runway. She was the curator of the exhibition “Glimpses of Glamour- Fashion Photography in the Mirror of a Century” which opened in the “Israel Museum of Photography” at Tel-Hai. No big surprise there, after all, Bat-Yaar studied fashion illustration under Riki Ben-Ari who illustrated Suzy Menkes fashion reports in the British Times and The Evening Standard. She also graduated with a degree in art and philosophy of the esthetics from New Jersey’s Upsala College and studied fashion design at the Washington D.C. Ardis School of Design.
She has often been described in Israeli media as Israel’s “first lady of fashion and reporting.

In the very eye-opening interview with Bat-Yaar, I learned a lot about the history of Israeli fashion and it left me wondering why fashion here is not on the world map (at least as much as it was in the 60s and 70s, as Nurit mentioned in her answers to the questions.) Hence, the biggest reason I’m mentioning it here and perhaps a small step in the mission of my blog: to promote the potential of the talented designers, labels, and fashionistas we have here in Israel.

Nurit Bat-Yaar
Some surprising things I learned about Israeli fashion:

» According to Bat-Yaar, present day Israelis know very little about the heritage of Israel’s fashion industry and its fabulous success on the international arena
» Back in the 60s and 70s, and to a certain extant in the 80s as well, exotic styles and ethnic fabrics (Yemenite embroidery, kafias, were much more popular in Israel than the mod, indie styles of today).

“Designers were more oriented to the country’s cultural resources and used them as an inspiration. Today, on the other hand, globalization has taken over. Companies go to far-eastern low-cost labor manufacturers. Young designers (once hired by the export industry) now work on a small scale in their own studios.”–Nurit Bat-Yaar
» Stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Diana wore designs by Israeli designers
» Israelis have done much in the world of fashion. Gottex is one of the most famous swimwear lines in the world and Zuri Guetta invented the use of silicone incorporated fabric whose clients include leading haute-couture Paris designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier.

» Designers like Donna Karan and John Galliano have assisted students at Shenkar with internships and apprenticeships.

Hi, today I would like to share with you an item published in today's "Maariv" by fashion journalist Lital Rosenstein. Lital published the book's cover photo seen here in which model Adaya Meirchik, photographed by Miri Davidovits is wearing a timeless Jacob Harpaz gown he designed in the 80s. About the book Lital wrote: "Nurit Bat-Yaar one of the local fashion icons, is launching the book

Fashion lovers can indulge in gorgeous photos included in chapters which follow the changes in the local fashion scene, a discussion enriched by cultural-political-social aspects.

Today, I also got a call from David Sela, editor-in-chief of the Nostalgia online website who told me he had talked about the "fantastic book" in Moshik Timor's radio show and praised it there.

Thank you Lital Rosenstein.

Orel Butterfly: "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" - "The Best Fashion Book"

Hi, Today I would like to share with you guys the latest interview I gave about the album-book "שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל 1948-2008" conducted by Orel Butterfly and published in her blog: http://israblog.nana10.co.il/blogread.asp?blog=684670

Orel started her post by writing: "Nurit Bat-Yaar, is the greatest fashion personality in the country and author of the best fashion book ever written here, and this is an understatement, and one of the best I have ever read. After I was enormously impressed by the book and since for years I have regarded Nurit  as a model ( in the sense of: someone to follow in her footsteps, N.B-Y) - the idea of interviewing her seemed to me next to impossible. Nevertheless, I have decided to give it a try".

"During the interview I have discovered that aside from being intelligent, smart and  really great (something I've known beforehand) Nurit is a charming, pleasant and courteous."

"This interview was definitely one of my greatest achievements and I am proud to post it here in the blog. I am sure you would enjoy it very much and will be enriched by it. Enjoyable reading!"

Orel included in her post several lovely photos from the book which you can see once you click on the above link to her blog, including a great 1968 Fini Leitersdorf for Maskit design adorned with coins (taken by Peter Hertsog) and the stunning Ben Lam photo of a Lea Gottlieb for Gottex 1976 beachwear design. She was also kind enough to include quotes from some of the book reviews the album-book got.

The only problem with the post - is its English translation which Orel included. It is the Google automatic one and hence it includes errors. Orel promised to have it corrected and once it would be done I'll be certain to inform my English readers.

Thanks so much Orel for the great encompassing post and the recommendation of the book. I appreciate it very much.

"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" In Simona Kogan's Blog.

Hi, today I would like to thank Simona Kogan for writing about "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל" in her blog:  Fashion Israel אופנה ישראלית - http://fashionisrael.wordpress.com/
At this point Simona chose to concentrate on my friendship with "Lanvin"'s Alber Elbaz
who is featured in the album-book in several photos (including this one taken in 1994 by Rafael Fuchs and stylised by me for "Yedioth Ahronoth", when Alber was designingfor Jeffrey Been).  Alber Elbaz was also kind enough to write an introduction for my book, describing there, in his own words, our very first meeting when he was still a soldier in charge of cultural affairs.

Simona shares with her blog's readers the story about how I had followed Elbaz's career since this first meeting till his outstanding success as the designer who, according to U.S Vogue turned "Lanvin" to the world's most desired fashion label. She concludes her post with the following sentence: "As I read the book and learn more about Bat-Yaar and her genius, there will definitely be more on this blog as she is essential to understanding the history of Israeli fashion."

Thanks so much Simona.

"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" in Keren Ben-Horin's FIT's post.

Hi, today I would like to thank Keren Ben-Horin, a Shenkar graduate, now at  New York's F.I.T about an interview she conducted with me which she posted today at  the Fashion Institute of Technology's (FIT) of New York's Forum Blog called "On Pins and Needles". The blog is written by
BY THE GRADUATE STUDENTS OF FASHION AND TEXTILE STUDIES :HISTORY, THEORY, MUSEUM PRACTICE.
Inspired by the album-book "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008"
"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל 1948-2008" Keren Ben-Horin decided to conduct this interview which she posted there today about Israeli fashion then and now. The post includes several photos from the book: the book's cover image (taken by Miri Davidowits) of a Yaacov Hapaz gown, a Maskit creation by Fini Leitersdorf (taken by Peter Hertsog) , a Rozi Ben-Yossef kafia-fabric design (taken by Ben Lam) , a Yaron minkowski's golden hat-mask (taken by Gadi Dagon), the following Lea Gottlieb for Gottex design (taken by Ben Lam), and Bezalel's Mor Hemed's sculptural-futuristic creation (taken by Dafna Grossman).
In her post Keren Ben-Horin states:
Ms. Bat-Yaar’s book was not translated to English yet, but you can find all about it in her  blog:
It is a huge contribution to the very limited sources of the history of Israeli fashion and fashion design.

 It's title is:

From Rags to Riches- Israeli fashion rediscovered

A 1967 Lea Gottlieb design for "Gottex". Photo (by Ben Lam) from "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" album-book by Nurit Bat-Yaar.
And a few words about Keren Ben-Horin herself:
Keren Ben-Horin has a B.Des in Fashion Design from Shenkar College of Engineering & Design in Israel. Four years ago she moved to New York to work in the fashion industry and since then she has tried to absorb everything the city has to offer when it comes to fashion and style. She was always passionate about the academic aspects of fashion and so found a natural place in the Fashion and Textiles: History, theory and Museum Practice program at FIT. She is especially interested in 20th century fashion and the life and work of the great designers of our time. She is currently studying the work of Israeli designer Lea Gottlieb and the swimwear house she founded, Gottex.

"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" album-book on TV's Canhel 1.An interview ...

Hi, I have already reported to you about this TV interview about my album-book "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" which was shown on IBA's Channel 1 on April 1, 2010. However, at that time I didn't have the recorded video. Now, I'm happy to include the interview itself. It was done while I was in Tel-Aviv and the interviewer Liat Regev was in her Jerusalem studio. That's why the screen is divided into 2 parts.

Several persons, including Rut Dayan (in her forward to the book) and art critic Alice Blitental (in her book review) have indicated to me that "שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל 1948-2008"
indeed brings its readers and especially its photographs viewers to "שיכרון חושים". So I guess I shoudn't
be too upset that the IBA people presented the book on the screen as "שיכרון חושים - אמנות האופנה בישראל".
For the benefit of my English readers I would explain that "שיכרון חושים" means intoxication of the senses and that I have used this expression to call the book in Hebrew "שיכרון עיצובים" which means designs intoxication. This, in order to express the idea that the book's visual emphasis is on creative and imaginative designs rather than on basic, ordinary ones.

As for the interview itself, Liat Regev showed about 20 photos from the book introducing it as "an exciting and captivating book which intoxicates the senses". Among the pictures shown were Singer Ofra Haza's Yemenite coins hood, Bar Refaeli in a special T shirt from the chapter "Talking Clothes", Tami Ben-Ami in her own scarfs-outfit creation, Gideon Oberson 60s gown with a filigree back, Lea Gottlieb of Gottex' fantastically colorful beach-wear, Yaron Minkowski's fabulous, creative golden hat-mask, Fini Leitersdorf's for Maskit embroidered caftan as well as her outstanding design inspired by Artist Y. Simon's painting and her amazing Hamsa inspired outfit, Rozi Ben-Yosef's Kafia-fabric caftans, Rosh Indiani in an artistic Miro inspired print, Dani Bar-Shai's great patchwork skirt, Omri Goren's artistic men's overall, and many other great images. At the end of the interview refering to the artistic rose choker I was wearing she inquired "where is this fantastic thing you are wearing from?" - at this point I told her that a photo of this object d'art designed by Dori Csengeri was in the book as well, adding that Dori Csengeri is a very successful artist whose unique jewelry is exhibited in the international arena both in prestigious stores and in magazines, and that in one of the "Sex and the City" programs her earings were featured on Cynthia Nixon.

"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008"'s Facebook FAN CLUB has over 900 FANS.

"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל 1948-2008 ‎"Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" FACEBOOK's Book FAN CLUB has now over 900 FANS!!! On this happy occasion here is a great image from the book's chapter devoted to the Israeli use of coins in fashion. The creation is a 1998 design by Silvia Vered Of Shenkar. Photographer: Iddo Lavie. Model: Maya Yeshaayahu.

This modern design along with some other unique creations included in the chapter devoted to the subject of the use of coins in Israeli fashion enables one to realize how far and how contemporary Israeli designers went since the times when coins decorated garments, such as the Yemenite hood  (shown on Ofra Haza) and the Bedouin face chains of coins served as a means of survival for women who had to carry all their property on their own body.

Among the additional coin photos included in the chapter are a Castro-Men tuniqe, a Shai Shalom's one shoulder red-carpet gown, and a Silvia Vered (now called Silvia Versano) coins bra worn under a maxi off-white wool coat.

A graphic version of "israel fashion Art 1948-2008" photo in the 1st issue of "Designer Fashion" magz.

Hi, Today I would like to congratulate Yaara Keydar, editor of "Haaretz"' new fashion magazine "Designer Fashion" which came out today, Sept. 1, 2010. Yaara, a popular blogger as well as a former designer at "Castro" graduated with honors from Shenkar College of Design and Technology, B.Des in Fashion. , and also worked as fashion writer at "Rating" weekly magz.

In an article by Revital Madar about the military look, who requested some historic photos for the article - she included a 1948 picture of Eliyahu Sela, a Palmach soldier in his typical military garb.
The photo appears in  "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" "שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל" in the chapter devoted to hats. After receiving from me the photo Revital said it contributed a lot to the article's graphics. Thanks very much, Revital.

Although, most of the hats chapter's pictures are very modern, fashion-oriented and creative, it starts with a few Israeli Iconic hats from the times of the country's inception. One of those is the "Kova Gerev",knitted hat worn then by the Palmach guys. Another is the "Ata"' cotton "Kova Tembel" worn then, in trips, and in the Kibuts, by practically everyone.

The original photo as seen in the book looks as it does here above.

The Surrealistic Fable of Alber Elbaz in "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" album-book.

Alber Elbaz 1987 design while still a Shenkar Student. Photo: Samy Ben-Gad.           An "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" album book exclusive.

Hi, on the happy occasion of Facebook's Fan Club of the book "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008"
"שיכרון עיצובים - אמנות האופנה בישראל" having reached the round cute number (with its 3 infinity signs) of 888 Book's Fans I've uploaded this ALBER ELBAZ photo taken by Sami Ben-Gad, and modeled by Hanoch Reichelson.

This Boho-chic very captivating outfit was created by Alber in 1987 while he was a Shenkar student, his unique talent already showing up. In case you are not aware of it, about three years ago or so Alber made Time magazine's most prestigious 100 list and U.S. Vogue wrote that he turned Lavin's into the most desired label in the world.

Alber Elbaz also kindly wrote one of the introductions to my album book. So, if you are wondering how in the world did I manage to have this fashion world leader, admired and cherished by so many, write for me the introduction to my book? Well, it only took a phone call and a couple of reminders to this world-trotting designer. This is because in spite of Alber's unbelievable success, he remained the humble Prince Charming he always was (which is also one of his secrets of success), never forgetting who helped him when he had just started his career and even prior to it.

To tell you the truth, in my eyes Alber is no less than my very own surrealistic fable. Something that maybe can happen (if at all) only once in a lifetime. It is all told partly in his introduction to my book and in the book's Chapter "On the map - Israel Dresses World's Leading Fashion Icons." But I'll briefly recap the story here.

When I got a phone call in 1981 from an anonymous caller who introduced himself as a guide-soldier in charge of cultural affairs requesting that I give a talk about fashion at an event he wanted to organize for a group of female soldiers with Liza Boker designs and two of the leading models of the time, Tami Ben-Ami and Pinchy Mor - I wasn't prepared to say yes. But something in his personality (G-d knows what, perhaps his charm) must have convinced me to do it and I said OK to this 19 yr old soldier. Did I know then that this youngster would one day step into YSL's shoes designing the King's Rive Gauche line while the Master was still alive and personally approve the choice of his replacement?

No one could have predicted it then. That's why it sounds so surrealistic to me. A couple of weeks after the event for which Alber sent me a framed thank-you from his army department - his second call arrived. This time he was asking whether I would agree to meet with him again in order to take a look at some fashion drawing he created. Always searching after new budding talents - this was a request I couldn't refuse. He showed me his very colorful and vivid illustrations which definitely expressed his imaginative approach to fashion design. I praised him, adding a small piece of advice of my own suggesting he limit the number of exciting zones in one gown to preferably one point of intense attraction.

The next thing I knew Alber was accepted to Shenkar as a student. I kept track of him and his work there and posted one of his first Shenkar designs (Tami Ben-Ami modeling along with Basketball star Olsi Perry's son) on "Yedioth Ahronot"'s news pages. It was at the time the newspaper added color and the news pages editor Moshe Vardi requested I'd take advantage of it and contribute some of my fashion images to add pizazz to those pages as well.

Needless to say, I also reported about Alber's original outfits which he wore to the parties held at Shenkar. Nor did I miss any important move he made in the international arena, traveling to N.Y to interview him at Geoffrey Beene's, interviewing him once he moved to Paris to "Guy Laroche", attending his historic 1st YSL fashion show in Paris , including his YSL and Guy Laroche images in the exhibit "Glimpses of Glamour in The Mirror of a Century" which I curated (and which opened the millennium at Israel Photography Museum in Tel-Hai), talking with him when he did a special line for Italian designer Krizia, and covering his fabulous success at Lanvin.

It's been good to know you cultural-affairs soldier guide turned into a fabled Prince Charming Alber. Many thanks for the wonderful introduction you kindly wrote for my fashion album-book. It sort of closes a circle.

"Glimpses of Glamour - Fashion Photography in a Mirror of a Century

Hi, before writing the album-book "Israel Fashion Art 1948-2008" (Resling), while I was still working at "Yedioth Ahronoth" as its fashion editor - I was invited by Arie Sagi, Manager and chief curator of the Israeli Photography Museum of Tel-Hai's industrial park to be the curator of an international exhibit about fashion photography during the 20th century.
Since the exhibit's cataloge is still available at the Museum shop - Jochai Rosen's Viewfinder  website  has decided to publish a post about this unique exhibition and catalog.
Hebrew readers are invited to view it via the link: http://www.viewfinder.co.il/?p=1787 which includes 5 unique rare photos featured both in the exhibit and in the catalog.

For my dear English readers I'm enclosing the following post which is a shortened version of the Hebrew one:
"GLIMPSES OF GLAMOUR -FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY IN A MIRROR OF A CENTURY"
In 1999 I was invited by Arie Sagi head of Israel Museum of Photography at Tel-Hai to curate an international exhibition of fashion photography in the twentieth century which will reflect both overseas and local fashion photography. The exhibit which opened Dec. 25, 1999 celebrated the new millennium in the museum built by visionary industrialist Stef Wertheimer as part of an Industrial Park integrating industry and art.

Fashion Photography as a Mirror of an Era, Social Transformation and Defying Conventions
The exhibition as well as its catalog took the viewer on a journey in the time tunnel, a journey in a world of fantasy and glamour full of color, flair, aesthetics, images, artistic compositions and adventure. The exhibition showed the varied exciting ways fashion had been documented in the twentieth century….But the myriad ways in which fashion had been captured reflects more than the aesthetic aspects or smart designs. Underneath the veil of glamour the picture that surfaces reflects social, economical and political transformations. It reveals the development of the woman from a fragile, delicate figure reminiscent of the protagonist in the legend The Princess and the Lentil whose sleep was disturbed by a lentil placed under the ten mattresses on which she lay – to the omnipotent millennium woman.

The exhibit featured hundreds of visuals by leading world photographers such as
Richard Avedon, Patrick Demarchelier, , Helmut Newton, Norman Parkinson, Irving Pen, Herb Ritts, Ellen Von Unwerth, Bruce Weber, and many others. Leading Israeli fashion photographers included Gerard Alon, Sami Ben-Gad, Gadi Dagon, Mula Eshet, Daniel Hakim, Peter Herzog, Isri Halpern, Ron Kedmi, Ben Lam, Anni Landes, Menahem Oz, Yaki Halperin, to name a few.

The exhibit's catalogue is bi-lingual with texts in both English and Hebrew.
Designers represented in it include Christobal Balenciaga, Victor Balaish for Roberto Cavalli, Balmain, Pier Cardin, Alber Elbaz for Guy Laroche, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Kenzo, Calvin Klein, Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Versace, as well as many leading Israeli ones such as Gottex, Gideon Oberson, Fini Leitersdorf for Maskit etc.

In the catalog one can meet Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Kim Basinger, Twiggy, Veruschka, Naomi Campbell, Brook Shields, Michaela Bercu, Tami Ben-Ami, Maayan Keret, Shiraz Tal, Galit Gutman, Galia Albin, and many other international and Israeli beauties.

On the catalog cover is an Irving Pen for Versace image modeled by super-model Christy Turlington.

The catalogue can be purchased via the Tel-Hai Open Museum of Photography's shop. sarath@omuseums.org.i

Hi, I'm often been asked how did I start my fashion journalism career and it all goes back to my having been a fashion and ads photography model. So this is how it all happened. My major interest was art and the idea of modeling never crossed my mind. Unlike today when many girls dream of a career in modeling, when I was a teenager there was no TV yet in Israel, I would see fashion shows only in the pre-movie news reels and the models there seemed much older-looking with their auntie-style hairdos.

One day, my father who had a studio in which he and his staff created olive-wood artifacts such as large decorative fruit bowls with the original-natural wood bark around them, desk pen-holders and other souvenirs from the holy-land, asked me if I'd be willing to take a small package of olive-wood buttons somewhere, since his delivery boy didn't show up that day.

Little did I know that he would be sending me to Israel's leading fashion designer, "Maskit"'s Fini Leitersdorf, the creator of unique Israeli style and that the elongated olive-wood buttons were intended for her fabled hand-woven desert coats and duffel coats. Returning home, my parents reported to me that the designer had called them and expressed her wish I would become her model. I recalled those news-reel pre-movies fashion shows I had seen and said "Thanks, but no thanks!" I couldn't picture myself strolling like those aunties, seeing nothing common between them and me.

About 6 months later "Maskit"'s Fini Leitersdorf called my parents again. This time she said she was opening the first "Maskit" modeling course. It would be a very exclusive course taught to girls that only she or Noa Eshkol (daughter of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol) who would teach movement know personally. My mother said: "You don't necessarily have to become a model, but taking the course might contribute to your stature etc." I finally agreed to join with one condition, that I wouldn't be obliged to wear stiletto heels or wear lipstick (in those days I preferred  eye make-up with the younger look of natural lips). Fini responded by saying that at "Maskit" you could even model barefoot.

While attending the modeling course, I also studied fashion illustration with Riki Ben-Ari. At the end of the modeling course, there was a press fashion show. "La-isha" weekly magz. wrote about me: "She resembles Brigitte Bardot said the viewers when Nurit passed by them". In "The Jerusalem Post" they wrote: Among the most promising models is the blond girl Nurit". "Haolam Haze" weekly mag. made a very nice "Girl of the week" item about me. In no time, Fini's friend opened a modeling agency and told me I have many photography modeling offers awaiting for me. I gave it a try, and found out it to be more enjoyable than what I had thought, and have decided to give it a go. At the same time I was attending Fini Leitersdorf's studio and serving as her in-house model on whom she created some of her most stunning creations.

At one point, after an orange-picking postcard of mine became a big hit among U.N soldiers stationed in the Gaza strip who received it with their Israeli Foreign Office sent Christmas presents - Eli Tavor of "Haolam Haze" came to interview me about it. After discussing my modeling career as those days' most sought-after photography model - Eli asked me what else interested me. At this point, I showed him my fashion illustrations and was invited to a meeting with the mag. editor-in-chief Uri Avneri who suggested I present him with a trial page about fashion and life-style. I called it "Cherchez La Femme." And the rest is history.
